Oman Telecommunications Company
(Omantel) started to introduce the wireless fixed line
service, better known as the Wireless Local Loop (WLL)
in 2005. The objective is to provide telecommunications
services to mountainous and rough topography areas in
the Sultanate.
In order to connect the service, the
company installs wireless telecommunications networks
and stations in these rough areas. Such stations absorb
a good number of telephone lines.
This service includes all merits and
advantages of any fixed line connected through copper
cables. It enables subscribers to make and receive local
and international calls and to surf the Internet.
Subscribers can send and receive faxes and benefit from
all other services provided by the normal fixed line.
The provision of this telephone
service is part of Omantel's plans to introduce
telecommunications services to all rural villages and
regions in the Sultanate, which have yet to enjoy such
services because of rough geographic topography.
It is worth noting that the wireless
fixed line service currently covers around 100 rural
villages in the governorate and wilayats of the
Sultanate. Omantel's efforts are underway to introduce
the service to other villages.
